Do I have to insure my domestic help against accidents?

Regular employment
Yes, you must take out accident insurance for your household; this insurance is compulsory in Switzerland.

The most important facts about accident insurance in brief:

  • it is compulsory in Switzerland for all household employment,
  • it protects you against the financial consequences of any work-related accidents suffered by your household help,
  • it costs CHF 100 per year, regardless of the provider,
  • it can be terminated at any time upon termination of employment, and
  • it applies at the workplace and on the way to and from work.

Self-employed domestic helpers and cleaning companies
If your domestic help is self-employed or you book a cleaning company, you may not need to take out insurance. Discuss with your domestic help or cleaning company whether it is a recognised self-employment, which insurances are available and which you may still need to take out.
