Am I allowed to work on Sundays and public holidays?

No workers may be employed on public holidays and the lost working hours do not have to be compensated.

The bank holidays (1 August) is the only bank holidays that must be paid by law and on which no work may be done.
It is considered equal to Sundays in terms of labour law.
The cantons may treat a maximum of eight other public holidays as equivalent to Sundays.

Household helpers who are employed on a monthly salary shall be paid for hours lost due to a public holiday. For domestic workers on hourly wages, only 1 August is paid as a public holiday, unless expressly agreed otherwise.

Please note that this may vary depending on the canton and the CLA, the general employment contract for domestic workers.
